News - The Great Northern Hotel
YOO Furnishings is proud to be involved in the furnishing of the Great Northern Hotel, London’s finest boutique hotel, which recently reopened its doors to the creative and achingly hip King's Cross area. As the first of London's railway hotels it occupies a prime position between King’s Cross Station and St Pancras International, the busiest rail transport hub in Europe. The privately owned Grade II listed building has been thoughtfully restored by owner-operator Jeremy Robson of Ram. Guests at the hotel are treated to a range of delights, from the unique pantries on each floor to the 500 MB wireless, in room audio books and movies and a delectable range of cocktails on offer at the bar. The hotel has received a coveted commendation in the New London Architecture annual awards and has just been short-listed in the European Hotel Design Awards run by Sleeper magazine in two categories for the restaurant Plum + Spilt Milk and Great Northern Hotel architecture.
The Great Northern Hotel actually forms an integral part of King’s Cross station, with the signature dome of the new Western Concourse designed to fit the crescent shape of the hotel itself and is also just 18 metres away from the main Eurostar entrance to St Pancras International.
Originally designed by architect Lewis Cubitt, the Great Northern Hotel opened in 1854 as the first of the new generation of Victorian railway hotels. Its Italianate, classical features are textbook examples of the early Victorian period. Reflecting its architectural heritage, the 91-bedroom hotel has been sensitively refurbished and its interior design exudes a timeless elegance with a hint of modernity. The intention has been to evoke the romance of rail travel from a bygone age and to preserve a sense of history and style. Archer Humphryes Architects were commissioned to execute the concept and interior design of the hotel.
In a bid to capture the essence of contemporary luxury whilst retaining the hotel’s rich 150-year heritage, YOO Furnishings delivered hand-crafted, bespoke furniture, fixtures and fittings, designed by Archer Humphryes Architects, for the bedrooms and public spaces of the hotel. Working with traditional artisans and crafts people YOO Furnishings made sure the vision of Archer Humphryes Architects was maintained and nurtured through the utmost attention to detail and craftsmanship. The result is a truly rich interior environment with intriguing furniture and lighting pieces that create wonder and inspire conversation.
