News - Starck on YOO Panama
Marked out by gregarious explosions of colour and the irreverent themes of ‘magic forest’ and ‘play’, YOO Panama is every inch a monument to Philippe’s Starck’s light-hearted yet passionate attitude to life. But how does this residential wonderland, with its playground themes reflect his style and thinking?
Creative Director Mark Davidson talks about YOO Panama
“For me, a building is not dry. First it is a place where you will live and have fun and passion,“ says Starck, “This project isn’t about showing off my talent as a designer, it’s about the beauty and happiness of the people that live in the building. It’s more about human parameters, about vision, tenderness, humour, love, symbolism. A lot of things which are purely human.“
Without doubt, YOO Panama has those elements of flamboyance and fanastical dream-world that are so recognisably Starck - cleverly punctuated by simple furnishings. There is a sense of limitlessness both in ideas and space, and a real feeling of personalisation, freedom and even poetry. At the centre of Panama City, overlooking beautiful views of the bay and the Panama canal, YOO Panama is a 56 story icon. The residence offers the perks and service of a hotel at home – ‘hyper luxury living’ and YOO Inspired by Starck has created an exciting journey that takes you through the building. From the pleasant orchard at the entrance, through the awe-inspiring amenity spaces, grand library and ‘luminous’ spa to beautifully appointed private apartments in Culture, Classic, Nature and Minimal palettes.
“I’m very happy to have created something in Panama,” continues Starck. “Balboa Avenue is the only place in the city with a waterfront, which means it’s a place with lots of bars, restaurants and life. I admire a lot of things about the people of Panama – their love of music, and their passion. So I’m very happy to have created something here.”
