News - Kelly Hoppen on Barkli Virgin House
With the next series of hit UK BBC television show Dragon's Den just around the corner, and two exciting new Kelly Hoppen for YOO projects in Pune, and Mumbai, India to launch later this year, it seemed like a great moment to talk to Kelly Hoppen about her work and influences. As well as sharing a few of her favourite luxuries with us, we asked Kelly to explain the inspiration and thinking behind her designs for Barkli Virgin House, her residential collaboration with YOO in Moscow Russia, which sold out in record timing when it launched in Moscow’s exclusive Golden Mile in 2009.
Situated on 1-st Zachatievsky Pereulok in Moscow, Barkli Virgin House has been heralded as one of the most exclusive addresses in the world. As creators of many highly desirable properties in exclusive locales Barkli Corporation has partnered with many internationally celebrated architects and designers. Collaborating with Kelly Hoppen for YOO created an ideal opportunity to innovate and offer a new kind of opulent, elegant glamour to Muscovites.
“I had designed a number of projects for private clients in Russia, but Barkli Virgin House was my first Kelly Hoppen for YOO project there,” explains Kelly. “I wanted my first development in Russia to be incredibly special, so when we were approached with the amazing location on the Golden Mile, it was a dream come true. And being one of Moscow’s most prestigious locations, we needed a design to match so we created something exclusive, only 21 apartments, luxurious, sumptuous and quintessentially Kelly Hoppen for YOO.”
Indeed, Barkli Virgin House is ideally located a stone’s throw from the energetic, cultural heartland of Moscow. This is a location synonymous with luxury living, as a historical haven, buzzing with world-class cultural activity, from wonderful operas, productions and galleries, to bohemian night life amidst the ornate precincts and redbrick towers of the city and the shining Moskva River.
“I absolutely love Moscow – a truly beautiful and historical city,” continues Kelly. “Russia also holds a very special place in my heart as it’s where my grandparents are from. My Grandmother was a huge inspiration to me, growing up. They had a stunning family home with log fires and antique heirlooms. It was something that was created over so many years and there were so many layers of history, and memories and love. It was very old-fashioned, and although my designs are contemporary, I try to recreate that same warmth, and feeling in all my projects."
Alongside Urban, Sea Breeze and Green I created a unique style for Barkli Virgin House called Vintage. It’s not complete vintage through, it’s of utmost importance that my designs are high-end, exclusive and luxurious and most of all classic. So it’s more a homage to vintage. I have thankfully had a long relationship with Moscow and Russia through designing, for private clients there, so to be able to take my aesthetic to more people through a residential project is very special.”
