What? 'Chameleon Cabin. It shimmers like marble. But is made entirely from paper.'
Where? Röhsska Museet. Gothenburg, Sweden.
When? Now, until 12th May 2014.
Our homes may be made from bricks and mortar for now, but who knows what we'll be living in in decades to come. Göteborgstryckeriet, One of Europe’s foremost printers, has teamed up award winning architect Mattias Lind (White Architects) to make a very unique house. It's made from two millimetre cardboard, forming a corrugated, folded module. The house has a height of three meters (the same size as a Swedish Garden Shed), weighs approximately 220 pounds and has a floor area of approximately seven square meters. This prototype is only the size of a garden shed, but with a modular construction it can be duplicated and manipulated to create much larger structures. We often see paper used in new and creative ways for art, sculpture and even product design. However, to form architecture is a new triumph.
What? 'Out of Hand: Materialising the Postdigital'
Where? Museum of Arts and Design. New York, USA.
When? Now, until 1st June 2014.
Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital explores the 21st-century advances in methods of computer-assisted production known as digital fabrication. In today’s post-digital world, artists are using these means to achieve levels of expression never before possible – an explosive, unprecedented scope of artistic expression that extends from sculptural fantasy to functional beauty. The exhibition explores a monumental transition in the way human beings understand creation, from the earliest objects conceived and produced by individual makers through the tools of technological innovation. Today’s digital fabrication methods such as 3D printing, CNC machining and digital knitting unite artistic approaches, offering new opportunities for artists, architects, and designers to integrate these skills as vital part of their personal creative processes, representing a new movement.
