This week we’re getting inspiration from the ultimate tastemaker, Diana Vreeland by kicking back and watching The Eye Has to Travel. In it Lisa Immordino Vreeland documents the life of her charismatic grandmother-in-law in an artful melange of quotable quotes adroitly cut with tongue-in-cheek vintage movie footage.
"Of course, the best thing about London is Paris" Diana Vreeland
The first fashion editor at Vogue, Vreeland recognised, created and conveyed zeitgeist for half a century and her influence on the photography, designers and icons of the time still resonates today. Radiant and holding court, a sense of performance embellished everything she did, from her debut ‘Why Don’t You?’ fashion-column at Harper’s Bazaar (why don’t you… rinse your blonde child’s hair in champagne to keep it bright? Why don’t you….wear velvet violet mittens with everything?) to discovering Betty Bacall, spotting Hitler at the opera and legitimising the bikini.
In her own words, “You’re not supposed to give people what they want. You’re supposed to give them what they don’t know they want yet!”
